Futoshi Yamabe Yamabe (Japanese characters)
The Swallows second-best left-handed starter, Futoshi Yamabe had a great sophomore year (1995), posting a 16-7 record with 144 strikeouts, 89 walks and a 3.83 ERA.

Suffering arm troubles, the baby-faced southpaw has been less successful in other outings.

Working mostly out of the bullpen in 1997, Yamabe went 0-2 with two saves and a 3.51 ERA while collecting 24 strikeouts and issuing 13 walks. During the Japan Series, Yamabe was pulled after giving up one earned run in 1/3 of an inning.

Since 1994, the 28-year-old lefty has compiled a 24-19 record with a 3.83 career ERA and 330 strikeouts against 201 walks. While it's too early to give up on the erratic pitcher, it's uncertain whether he'll be able to recover from arm troubles which have hampered his career.
