The
Swallows version of a Swiss army knife, Katsuyuki
Dobashi can play all the infield and outfield
positions and hit quite well. In fact, during the
1997 Japan Series, Dobashi batted .428 with three
doubles, three runs and two RBIs. During his ten-season career,
Dobashi has compiled a .274 lifetime average with
47 home runs, 220 RBIs and 108 doubles (32 in
1995).
Though
missing over thirty games in 1997 while on the
disabled list, the right-handed journeyman batted
.301 during the regular season with 22 doubles,
eight home runs, 61 RBIs and a .346 on base
percentage. But even a successful season wasn't
enough to make the lonely second baseman happy.
A
serious player with a quiet private life, Dobashi
became the butt of several jokes shortly after
the Japan Series. The day after, when most Yakult
players were out celebrating, Dobashi spent the
evening at home watching television. Some of his
teammates even speculated that the utility player
didn't have any friends to go out with.
Almost
apologetic about his lack of a social life,
Dobashi confessed that he was ready to try an
arranged marriage because he just wants to have a
family to come home to after work.
