Offering
occasional flashes of good pitching, Hiroto Kato
has been highly unpredictable since he began
pitching for the Swallows in 1989. Aside
from a reasonably successful rookie year (2.83
ERA, 6-9), the southpaw hurler had only pitched
well in 1995 when he posted a 2.84 ERA in 44 1/3
innings of middle relief.
But in 1997, everything went well
for Kato as he earned a 5-1 record with six saves
and an impressive 1.99 ERA.
Despite the good outing, there's no
telling what the 29-year-old lefty will do in
1998. In his nine season career, Kato has
compiled a 25-24 record with a 3.63 ERA.
