More than just a southern suburb
of Tokyo, Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan.
But the core of the city lies along the Keihin Tohoku
Line from Yokohama Station to Ishikawacho.
Around
Yokohama Station there are several department
stores, including Takashimaya and Tokyu Hands. A few
blocks south of the station you'll find a large bowling
alley with batting cages on the roof (follow the
"thwack" sounds), several cinemas and
restaurants. Walking past Bic Camera look for McDonalds.
Below the golden arches is The Tavern, an excellent
British pub. If you turn left just before Bic Camera, at
the end of the block (past the porn theater) is Stoves, a
pretty good Mexican restaurant.
On
the East side of Yokohama Station are several towers with
high priced and remarkably low quality food. Along the
waterfront, you can take a sightseeing boat around
Yokohama Bay.
Sakuragicho:
Two train stops south of Yokohama Station, you'll find
Sakuragicho. At the foot of Landmark Tower is a large
mall which includes Yurindo, the largest English-language
bookstore in Yokohama, Sizzler, and many clothing stores
as well as all the usual fast food restaurants.
Just
beyond Landmark Tower are Queens Towers 1, 2 and 3.
Inside you'll find more shopping and Yokohama's Hard Rock
Cafe.
The
Yokohama City Library -- which offers many English
language books, newspapers and magazines -- can be found
about ten blocks west of Yokohama Station (consult a map
for precise directions).
Kannai:
One stop south of Sakuragicho is Kannai, the center of
Yokohama. Nearby, you can find Yokohama Stadium,
Chinatown, Yamashita park, several movie theaters, bars
and restaurants. (For more information about Kannai...)
Ishikawacho:
You can either walk to the Motomachi shopping
district (about ten blocks south of Kannai Station) or
follow the Keihin Tohoku Line one more stop to
Ishikawacho. At Motomachi, there are several clothing
shops as well as Tower Records and the Union, the best
foreign supermarket in Yokohama. If you climb the hill
just south of Motomachi, you'll find Foreigners' Cemetery
and Minatono-mieruoka Park, which offers a great view of
Tokyo Bay.
