Homesickness
can often be eased, albeit temporarily, with a few
convenient appliances. Surrounding Akihabara Station
(Yamanote Line) are hundreds of electronics stores
selling everything from electronic rice cookers to laser
printers. Tokyu Hands and Bic Camera departments stores
are located near most major train stations in Tokyo and
Yokohama and sell a wide variety of household goods. Finding a balance between Japanese
food and more familiar dishes can also make it easier to
survive Tokyo. Most supermarkets in Japan have a few
Western items, but few have a more complete selection
than the National Azabu supermarket in Hiroo (Hibiya
Line), which also has sister-stores in Denen-chofu
(Toyoko Line) and in Yokohama, near Ishikawacho on the
Keihin-Tokoku Line. Across the street from Hiroo Subway
Station, Meidi-ya also sells a wide selection of imported
goods.
Above
the National Azabu lies a modest bookstore. But for sheer
selection of foreign books and magazines, few places can
beat Kinokuniya, located near Takashimaya department
store, across the street from Shinjuku Station's south
exit. Good Day Books, one block east of Ebisu Station
(Yamanote Line), offers a great selection of low-price
second-hand books. Located in Landmark Tower Plaza
(Sakuragicho Station), Yurindo offers the widest array of
new books and magazines in Yokohama.
